Science

Thinker

Providing a world class curriculum for students educated within Twynham Learning is fundamental to the educational vision of our Trust. At all TL schools we want students to develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. It is our intent that children will develop an understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through the different types of enquiry that help them to answer scientific questions about the world.  Scientific knowledge and understanding provides primary aged students with an understanding of how to respect and care for their bodies, as well as our environment and the living things within it. In addition, students gain an appreciation of how developments in Science have led to important technological advancements. We will ensure children have a varied, progressive and well-mapped out science curriculum that provides the opportunity for progression across the full breadth of the science national curriculum for KS1 and KS2.

Primary curriculum drivers

Community Linked

Across all of the TL primary schools the local community forms part of the core learning that students undertake in science. Schools have access to outdoor spaces which allow them to look at how the natural world works by looking at the plants and animals in their school environment. The schools engage in a series of trips outside of school visiting local sites such as Moors Valley, Marwell Zoo, the Winchester Science Centre as well as welcoming visitors into school such as the science dome. Schools within TL work with other primary schools in the local area and take part in Science inter-school quizzes and Science fairs.

Informed Thinking

The TL Science curriculum gives students the opportunities to ask questions about the world we live in, and it provides a logical approach to finding answers, as well as developing critical thinking skills. Students build on their skills in working scientifically, as well as on their scientific knowledge, as they develop greater independence in planning and carrying out fair and comparative tests to answer a range of scientific questions. Science has a range of subject specific vocabulary and we want our students to be able to use this vocabulary with confidence throughout their primary journey.

Outward Looking

There are a growing number of fulfilling careers, hobbies and communities within STEM fields and the TL curriculum will work with local stakeholders to enhance the learning of our students to ensure that they have both the skills and knowledge which will set them up for future studies and job prospects. We want to develop in all young people a lifelong curiosity and interest in understanding the world through science. We want to ensure that students understand the effect their behaviours have on the environment around them. Science plays an essential role in the world’s future and our children should be given the opportunity to understand and develop a sense of excitement about the world they live in.
